Many years ago, as the USA launched its current foreign entanglements, I translated Prévert’s “Familiale,” seeing in it a picture of the way the military-industrial complex can corrupt the norms of family life.

Il fait des affaires Oh, he’s got his own business

Son fils la guerre Son’s in the war
Lui des affaires And he’s got his own business
Il trouve ça tout naturel le père Dad feels OK with that
Et le fils et le fils And the son? what about the son?
Qu’est-ce qu’il trouve le fils? Is he OK with this?
Il ne trouve absolument rien le fils Well, the son’s OK w/ everything

Il fera des affaires avec son père He’ll go into business with his dad
La guerre continue la mère continue So the war continues, mom continues

Le fils est tué il ne continue plus and the son doesn’t continue anymore
Le père et la mère vont au cimetière Mom and dad go to the cemetery
